Momentum Swings Can Make Or Break Your Results
If you know me, then you know that I am an avid athlete as well as a sports fan. I played on my college varsity tennis team for all four years during school and enjoyed teaming up with my roommates for some intramural flag football or basketball. If you have ever participated in a sport, you have likely experienced what it feels like when all the momentum swings to your side! You can’t do anything wrong! Touchdowns come easily, all of your three pointers are falling, and you are just watching the other team scramble and try to keep up. Chances are however you have also felt when that momentum swings back the other way and is working against you, putting you on your heels and struggling to accomplish anything at all.
Momentum is a powerful force and can affect your life off the field just as much, if not more than when you are competing on it. There are momentum swings present in your relationships, your careers, your studies, your workouts, your nutrition intake and sometimes the most dramatic effect is had on your attitude!
These momentum swings affect everyone in their own way. Some people are really good at handling them. They can run into a little road bump and not let it throw them off track at all, perfectly maintaining any momentum they have already gained. Others, like me, sometimes struggle a little more when faced with oppositions to momentum. If I miss a workout or something, it is harder to keep focused the rest of the day on what I need to eat and drink because I already screwed up my plan. How does momentum affect you? Are you able to get back on track when the train gets slightly derailed or do you have issues with momentum swings because you can’t fend them off when they come your way?
The most important thing to remember about momentum is that IT IS ALL IN YOUR HEAD! When a player makes a clutch 3 pointer at the end of a quarter or a big interception during an important drive, the players on his or her team don’t all of the sudden physically improve. Where the change happens is in their mental state, and that is what you have to do to better prepare yourself to handle momentum swings. Don’t let the haters in your life bump you off the path you are headed down towards your goals.

Workout Momentum Swings
Perhaps you have a lot of struggles with staying accountable for your workouts? Join an accountability group or one of our Challenge groups! Keep your “Before” pictures in a place that you can look at them every single day to remember why you are pushing yourself. If you aren’t happy with what you see when you look at that picture, chances are you will do what it takes to make sure the momentum swings back into a positive direction! Maybe you need to actually write out a schedule and block of a section of the day for your workouts so that you don’t schedule anything else during that time. Do whatever it takes! If you don’t change what you’re doing, you’re going to keep getting the same thing you are already getting. Improve your own ability to handle momentum swings by arming yourself with better information.
Chances are, no matter how focused you are, you will be faced with momentum swings at some point during your challenge and often times you’ll be tested more than once.
